Last night I think I experienced this. I thought I turned on my side and opened my eyes. (Now that I have thought about it I don't think I did.) Anyway, I felt like I (my body) was being pulled down and I was trying to move and wake up but couldn't. While that was going on I heard like ocean waves/shushing getting louder. Then as I was close to waking up I felt like I was floating above my body at the same time I was being pulled down. If that made any sense? This felt like it happened in 30 seconds or something close to that. From what I've read about SP and OBEs today I'm pretty sure this is what happened. As all this happened I "watched" myself being pulled to hell and I heard a strange voice tell me "The devil will always test you." Can anyone explain to me what this means? Any of this.

I've had sleep paralysis episodes ever since I was 7 or 8. I'm 12 now, and they seem to happen more frequently, perhaps once a month. This latest one happened just today and, needless to say, it was the worst so far.

I must agree with Steph; sleep paralysis is terrifying but extremely fascinating.

I laid down next to my mom to take a nap with her. I dozed off in a sideways position, but when I opened my eyes I was in the subine position (face up) and I could hardly move. I wasn't scared at first since I was used to this experience since I was little, but then my legs began to rise. Looking at my feet, I was shocked and didn't see anything rising them. I felt hands holding firmly onto my ankles and lightly pulling me, though not strong enough to move my helpless body. I turned slowly to my mom as I could move, but bit by bit (I started by wiggling my finger), as I was shaking, and once I put my hand over her it stopped. I managed to speak but I don't know if she heard me. I fell asleep almost a few second after. had a nightmare and woke up later than I should've. The dream was vague but it was about someone entering my bedroom. A dark figure, since it was well, dark.

In this apartment, I always feel watched (as I type this, for example), sometimes hear voices, windows open and things fall by themselves. I am often scared when I am alone and I am scared of the dark because of what might sneak in... my mom feels the same, she doesn't want to say it's a ghost since she is very superstitious but I have doubts it's normal.

I'm very scared and alone now. Mom just left to pick up my little sister.

I get it very often, and it is very scary. I cant move my whole body, and my brain feels like I am drifting away, but like I am going to die if I let go, so I will myself over and over again to wake up and little by little I can move just a little bit more until finally I can move and shout. On many occasions i shout but no-one can here me. I also had the duvet over my face when I fell asleep the other night and I got SP and I needed to take the duvet off my face because I couldnt breathe but i couldn't move to get it off :-( Finally I could move and I took it off. Worst was when I had SP and i thought my partner climbed on top of my and started strangling me! I woke up and I was shouting at him but actually he never did anything. My mind was just trapped between reality and nightmare world! Glad I am not alone, will try out the tips next time!

Hey I'm 14 years old and i just had 'SP' (i think) last night. It happened to me once before so this was the second time. I remember it very clearly since it was just last night at around 1 in the morning. I've been trying to go to sleep for about two hours and then i thought i was dreaming but when i opened my eyes i was in my room and i tried speaking but i couldn't. I felt this tremendous weight on me like it was crushing my body down and only my eyes could move around but i felt like something was watching me so i closed them. One word was in my head and it was echoing over and over again and i could hear it getting louder like something was mocking me. It was extremely scary and i couldn't get out of it. But as soon as i did, i calmed down a little and when i tried to go back to sleep i slipped into SP again. It happened about three times until i got out of bed and went to go sleep with my sister. It stopped after that. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this.

Dear Ryan Hurd,

Unfortunately I am not in a position to tell you where I got this information, but I still thought it could be of interest to anybody open minded enough to dare regard this as true sorcery.

I can go as far as telling you that the source of this information has a trail going through the shamans of the Rattlesnake School of Turtle Island, the Twisted Hairs Metis Medicine Society Council of Elders, which incorporates shamans from both North, Central and South America following a continous line more than three thousand years back.

There is no dedicated or consistent litterature about these intimidating dream techniques due to the still active tradition of secrecy initially initiated when the Spanish conquistadors arrived, but it is actually frequently touched in the writings by the following shamanic diciples, who all are in some way connected to the Twisted Hairs Metis Medicine:

Merilyn Tunneshende is one of the active disciples who has written "Twilight Language of the Nagual - The Spiritual Power of Shamanic Dreaming."

Florinda Donner is another woman in this group. She has written the book "The Witch's Dream".

Another member is Taisha Abelar who has written "The Sorcerer's Crossing".

The fourth member known to have published material from his experiences in this group is Carlos Castaneda, who has written several books,
"The Art of Dreaming" the most notable.

All four disciples have contributed with some highly interesting descriptions of their involvement in this strange shamanic group, and íf I remember things correctly, they even touch the very source of the Toltec dream knowledge.

Jordon -- thanks for the narrative -- very interesting, I've never heard of this particular SP encounter before. Sounds like you're making a transformation from unpleasantness to confident action in regards to the sexual aspects of SP. Pretty remarkable, I'd like to hear more sometime about the entities themselves.

David, you may want to check out my article on sleep paralysis and spirituality: http://dreamstudies.org/2010/02/26/spiritual-sleep-paralysis/

I want to reassure you that SP is not your fault, and I have never heard it described in Christian settings as a punishment. Even St Augustine forgave himself for his dreams -- read more about the history of dreams and Christianity here:

Leila, thanks for sharing. The encounter with an entity who claims to want to impregnate the dreamer is an ancient tale... we have writings describing such things from the ancient Babylonians and Dynasty Egypt too. I can't advise you as to the nature of the dream figure... but I can tell you that many sufferers have been able to draw stronger boundaries and resolutions to keep such negative figures out of the sleep paralysis state of mind. It requires courage but you will find the strength. The most important thing to consider is your own beliefs -- if you believe in demons or ghosts, these forms are likely to appear when you feel vulnerable. how do you create safety? how do you calm yourself down? where do you lean in times of crisis? Look to your helpful allies -- be them living people, family, or spiritual guides -- and incorporate them into an affirmation or prayer before you go to bed. These things and more I discuss in my free PDF the Sleep Paralysis Report (scroll to bottom of screen and click the image).
